The Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiaei) is a flightless bird that belongs to the ratite family. Emu, by height, is the second largest living bird and the last remaining member of the genus Dromaius. It is native to Australia and has brown, soft feathers. Owing to long neck and legs, the emu can run at the speed of 48 km/h (30 mph). It is the second tallest bird in the world. Emus can detect threats from some distance due to good hearing and eyesight. Emus drink infrequently and can go for weeks without eating. They are omnivorous and eat different varieties of plants, seeds, fruits and insects. Females can mate several times and lay several clutches of eggs in one season. The male does the incubation; during this process he hardly eats or drinks and loses a significant amount of weight. The eggs hatch after around eight weeks, and the young are nurtured by their fathers.
